I drive a 2009 vw with the 2.5 engine with 130k on the clock. So as I’m pulling back into work from lunch, my cel comes on. I pull into my spot and notice that rather than idling as normal, my rpm is rhythmically bouncing between 1100 and 1300. Shut off, restarted, normal for a few seconds and right back to bouncing around. I’m going to have it scanned asap, but any ideas of what might cause this? Should I drive it to a shop or leave it where it is?

Cam sensor, maybe? Sounds like the ECU might be getting a bad signal and it’s constantly trying to “correct” the idle.

misfiring, and then trying to compensate for the missed cylinder. coil packs. common VW item.

First step is to find out what the code is. Most auto parts stores will check the code at no charge. Then you can decide which direction to go for the fix.

Sounds like fuel air mix is slightly off when it goes to closed loop fueling. Not noticeable under normal driving conditions, but causes a rough idle. I’m calling it on the upstream O2 sensor, but it could be any of the sensors involved in air metering (intake air temp, MAF, MAP...)

Reading the code will tell you all you need to know. O2 sensors are a pain to get too and you need a special socket for them. The others are a couple of screws and are located near the top front of the engine bay on most cars. Look on youtube to see if it is something you can do yourself.

That would be my guess as well.

This was my guess as well. When my coil pack went (on a 2009 VW with the 2.5), the result was a drop in rpm, and the engine trying to catch up by increasing revs.

When driving, is there an intermittent “shudder” like the car briefly has reduced power?
